âClarice, maybe you should invite my girls over tonight for dinner, and when they arrive, they will find me here,â Stella said, as she was still indecisive about how and when to let Julie and Christina know she had stayed in Winding Creek.
âI wouldnât mind, but do you think they would come if I invited them?â Clarice asked as she took a sip of her favorite Moscato wine.
âI believe they will come to visit you. Letâs just try it and see what happens. If they donât come with your invitation, then I guess Iâll have to invite them myself,â Stella said as she sat down next to Clarice on the lounging chair they had next to the pool.
âBy the way, thanks for lunch today. Donât worry about dinner. I will have to come up with a menu. I should call the girls first to make sure they can make it today since itâs also very unexpected,â Clarice said as she fixed her oversized floppy straw hat. She loved to tan herself by the pool.
âI think Iâll go for a swim,â Stella said as she took off her cover-up to reveal her black one-piece bathing suit.
Stella had always been very modest, according to Clarice, but the reality was Stella had body issues and was insecure. She also thought showing too much skin was inappropriate. Therefore she had never worn a bikini or even a tankini.
âHave fun. Iâll be here drinking my wine and reading this cozy mystery book,â Clarice said as she picked her book back up to read.
It was now about 3 p.m., and it was the best time to call Julie and Christina.
Christina didnât answer Clariceâs phone call. She then dialed Julie.
âHi aunt Clarice, how are you?â Julie answered her phone call.
âHi Julie, Iâm doing very well. How are you?â
âGood, just working.â
âOk, Iâll cut to the chase. I wanted to invite you and Christina over for dinner tonight. I know itâs really out of the blue and last minute, but do you think you can join me tonight?â
âI donât think tonight will work. Can we have dinner tomorrow instead?â
âYes, that would be fine. I will have dinner ready by 7 p.m. See you then.â
âSee you then, aunt Clarice.â
âWell, what did Julie say?â Stella asked as she got out of the pool. And could not make out what was being said.
âJulie is such a great girl. She reminds me of Steve.â
âCome on, Clarice, what did she say?â Stella asked, annoyed that she wasnât being straightforward.
âOh, alright, she said tonightâs not a good night to have dinner. She asked if tomorrow would work, and I said yes. Theyâll be here tomorrow by 7 p.m.â
âOk, thanks. I guess I have some more time to think about how Iâm going to tell them,â Stella said as she dried herself with a towel and sat in the lounge chair next to Clarice.
âStella, you need to relax. Everything will be ok. Here, have some of my Moscato wine,â Clarice said as she grabbed the other wine glass on the tray and filled it.
